Course description
In this workshop, we will provide participants with instructional principles that come directly from cognitive research and the speakers' experience, and their implications for teaching practice. We will then extensively discuss which principles can be easily translated (and how) into teaching strategies and applied into actual courses. Examples of effective teaching techniques already put into action in academic courses will be described.
The workshop's main goals are: 1. identify a limited number of techniques that the participants would feel confident to introduce in their bioinformatics academic courses and 2. develop, in a shared effort involving participants and speakers, guidelines with recommendations and concrete actions that can be easily adopted by any lecturer in their courses.
The outcomes of the workshop will be shared and discussed during the BITS conference on June the 16th. Finally, on June the 17th at 2 pm there will be a round table closing the conference to further discuss teaching issues and enroll academic lecturers interested in introducing a few effective techniques in their course (AA 2016/2017). Enrolled participants will be followed up to report outcomes of the "experiment" to the BITS conference in 2017.

Audience: Scientists who are involved - or plan to be involved as part of their future career - in academic teaching.
