POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW IN BIOINFORMATICS - Bergen - Norway

The ‘Omics’ Data Analysis and Visualization Group (ODAV) at the Broegelmann Research Laboratory, Department of Clinical Science, University of Bergen, Norway is seeking a POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW IN BIOINFORMATICS.

The selected candidate will work in Bergen, Norway and also have the opportunity to spend several months a year at our partner institutions (Institute of Oncology Research (IOR), Bellinzona, Switzerland; Swiss Artificial Intelligence Lab (IDSIA) Lugano, Switzerland; and the University of Gainesville (UF), Florida, USA).

The initial appointment is from 1.10.2013 – 31.1.2016.

For further information about the project and the position, please contact Nicolas Delaleu, e-mail: nicolas.delaleu@gades.uib.no.

The Position

The main research initiatives of the research consortium affiliated with the ODAV-group involve etiology, epigenetics and experimental treatment of specific autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren’s syndrome and Addison’s disease). In this context, the role of the ODAV-group is to further develop and apply bioinformatics in order to advance analysis and interpretation of global datasets according to the principles of systems biology. Data integration and continuous development of innovative data-visualization solutions are thereby of particular importance. The datasets relevant for this research are continuously provided to the ODAV-group by leading research groups at the University of Bergen, University of Gainesville, Florida, USA, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm Sweden and are also generated in collaboration with biotech companies. The ‘-omics’ methodologies applied include: microarray, RNA-seq, miRNA-seq, methylation analyses and GWAS.

The selected candidate is expected to use state-of-the-art bioinformatics tools to process and analyze the datasets generated from murine and rat specimens, as well as from cell cultures tissues and clinical samples. Responsibilities include adapting, optimizing, and applying data analysis pipelines. In collaboration with other bioinformaticians, novel modeling and data visualization approaches will be explored. Importantly, the selected candidate will also participate in interpreting the biological meaning of these data in close collaboration with the experimentalists.

About postdoctoral fellowships

The purpose of the positions is the building of competence by means of further development of research work to the extent that a higher level than what is possible within an ordinary PhD program is reached. The main goals of the positions are to qualify the successful candidate for professional top positions. It is a goal that the employment period is carried out as a continuous research program.

Postdoctoral fellowships are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed as a postdoctoral fellow for more than one fixed term period at the same institution. Also, you cannot be employed in a postdoctoral position if you have previously held this type of position at a different institution in the region.

Qualifications and qualities

The successful applicant has earned a PhD in bioinformatics or computational biology and has experience in processing and analyzing various types of ‘-omics’ data. Excellent technical and mathematical skills, as well as extensive statistical knowledge are required. Fluency in scripting Perl or Python, proficiency in using R, as well as basic knowledge of Java is a must. Experience with biostatistical and data mining packages (e.g., Bioconductor) and familiarity with bioinformatic databases (e.g., NCBI, GO, UCSC and EMBL) are desirable. In addition, knowledge about network analysis and visualization using Cytoscape is an advantage. We also value a solid background in the fields of immunology or genetics.

Fluency in English, excellent scientific writing skills and a great interest for interacting with scientists from different disciplines are required.
