Postdoctoral fellow in RNA bioinformatics and transcriptome analysis

Postdoctoral fellow in RNA bioinformatics and transcriptome analysis

Center for non-coding RNA in Technology and Health (RTH) (http://rth.dk) at Department of Veterinary Clinical and Animal Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, has an open postdoctoral position in RNA bioinformatics and transcriptome, next generation sequencing (NGS) analysis. We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join our team as soon as possible. You will be a hard-working team player and a key person in the project. The project is financed by the Innovation Fund Denmark (09-067036).

Background
Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) are a highly abundant class of genes that play numerous important roles in the cell and in disease. These ncRNAs often contain RNA structure either for the entire sequence or sometimes as minor "domains". In RTH we have developed a range of computational tools for the analysis of both structured RNAs and high-throughput data and we address ncRNAs in the context of disease and in technology. The project takes outset in data from inflammatory diseases.

Job description
Focus will be on detecting differentially expressed genes in disease cases and key goals of the project, is to filter and rank candidate genes. Various enrichment analyses with respect to existing annotations will be made and pipelines for expression analysis, data integration and statistical analysis will be developed within the project.

Qualification Requirements
The candidate should have:
• Documented scientific qualifications as PhD or equivalent in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science or similar
• Very strong expertise and experience with script language such as Perl and Python (or similar)
• Strong experience with the linux/unix environment, command lines and shell scripting
• Experience with statistical analysis
• Differential expression analysis (with background correction/ multiple testing)
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
• Demonstrated capacity for effective team work
• Possess good interpersonal skills

Desirable criteria
• Previous background in bioinformatics (computing skills related to the use of databases)
• Knowledge in mammalian physiology and metabolic diseases
• General knowledge about RNA structure folding algorithms
• C or C++

Relationships
The Postdoc will report to Prof Jan Gorodkin, Director of Center for non-coding RNA in Technology and Health.

The Postdoc will interact with staff at all levels, both internally and externally, regarding relevant research topics.

Employment conditions
Employment will be in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Government and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). The gross basic salary range for Postdoctoral Fellows is DKK 32,000 to DKK 33,700 per month (around EUR 4,200-4,500) (level 6 to 8). To the basic salary a supplement could be negotiated, dependent on the candidate’s experience and qualifications. An additional 17.1% monthly contribution to pension will be paid by the employer.

The position is time limited for uptil 12 months and will expire on 31 December 2016 with a 37 hour working week.

Researchers recruited from abroad can apply for a special tax scheme – named Researcher Taxation. With this scheme, as a Postdoc at University of Copenhagen you can choose a flat rate tax of 26% for a period of 60 months. An additional mandatory 8% labor market social contribution will be added. In order to be covered by the flat rate tax of 26%, it is a requirement that you have not been tax liable to Denmark 10 years prior to your employment at the University of Copenhagen.
