THEME AND SCOPE:

Alternative splicing (AS) is the major determinant for the expansion
of the transcriptome and proteome in eukaryotic organisms.  AS has
recently emerged as a key mechanism to modulate gene expression in a
tissue-specific manner and it is also involved in the onset and
progression of serious pathologies.
The rapid growth of EST and transcript data produced by large-scale
sequencing has encouraged the development of computational methods to
assess the alternative splicing pattern of genes from the analysis of
spliced transcript alignments to the genome. The most recent studies
on detection of alternative splice sites have revealed that this topic
is a quite challenging computational problem, which is far from having
a solution. The so called spliced alignment problem is now becoming
even more complicated by arise of the next generation sequencing
technologies. On the other side, data on splice sites produced by
computational methods are largely used to investigate the crucial role
of AS.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together the knowledge of
researchers from different areas, ranging from theory of algorithms,
molecular biology, computational biology and plant and human genomics,
that are involved in the thorough investigation of this key mechanism
by both computational and experimental approaches.
