A highly interdisciplinary research environment at the intersection among Computer, Biology, Medical and Cognitive Sciences. High performance computing facilities, and NGS sequencing technology, as well as state-of-the-art genetic and medical data, will be available to this research.
Three PhD students will be enroled in Biosciences and one in Brain, Mind and Computer Science (BMCS). The 3 Biosciences positions are supported by the Dept. of Biology, Dept. of Medicine and Dept. of Women's and Children's Health, while the position of BMCS is supported by the Dept. of Mathematics. The 4 positions have the same title "Bioinformatics for Personal Genomics: Sviluppo e applicazione di procedure di apprendimento automatico per l'analisi di dati genomici da pazienti con malattie monogeniche e poligeniche".
The ideal candidates should have either a background in molecular biology and genomics, or in computer science. The aim of the PhD training program is to form bioinformaticians with good expertise in genomic research, therefore if a candidate comes from a biological background he/she should be prepared to enter the field of computer science while the reciprocal path should apply to those coming from computer science.
We do not expect that the applicants are already expert bioinformaticians. What we ask is that they want to seriously apply themselves to this field of research. The candidates should also be prepared to work in a team. This does not mean that they will not have their own project. On the contrary, very clear projects will be defined within the first 6 months for all the PhD students, taking into consideration their specific interests and aptitudes. On the other hand, each project will be part of larger projects aiming to give answers to the medical case-studies considered by Bioinfogen and to develop general tools for genomic studies.
If you are interested in this project we invite you to apply. If you want, you are welcome to contact us at the email address indicated above for further details. Alternatively you can email directly to the people responsible for the research units, indicated in the Bioinfogen home page, whose email addresses you should be able to find in the general directory of Unipd.
The position in BMCS requires a specific background in computer science, so only candidates with a degree in informatics or related disciplines should apply. The 3 positions in Biosciences are open to candidates with either biological or computer science backgrounds. The enrolment in Biosciences will not limit in any way the possibility to access to the highest level of informatics training; similarly, the enrolment in BMCS will allow the maximal access to the biological and medical expertise available within the project.
