Integration of language-based stochastic modeling and
equation-based deterministic modeling for biological systems
In this project the candidate will define new theoretical approaches to model hybrid systems by merging deterministic equation-based techniques with stochastic, language-based approaches. The theoretical framework proposed will be validated by applying the technique to real-case studies in the area of complex biological systems that relates diet and metabolic diseases.
The project will be carried out at COSBI within the Network Simulation group (http://www.cosbi.eu/index.php/research/analytical-approaches-research).
Preferred skills: Master’s degree in mathematics, biostatistics or theoretical computer science with emphasis on modeling and simulation.

n. 1 scholarship reserved for the research project
Statistical methods for high-throughput data analysis applied
to biological systems for functional sub-network identification
In this project the candidate will define methods for statistical and network analysis of high-throughput biological data such as genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic data. The methodology will focus on identification of conditionally active subnetworks from global molecular interaction networks (such as metabolic and protein interaction networks). Methods developed in this work will be applied to real case studies from the field of systems nutrition.
The project will be carried out at COSBI within the Systems Nutrition research group (http://www.cosbi.eu/index.php/research/systems-nutrition-research).
Preferred skills: Master's degree in bioinformatics or statistics with focus on biological data analysis.
Principal investigator: Melissa Jayne Morine
