First Announcement and Preliminary Call for Abstracts

The Italian Bioinformatics Society in collaboration with the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology “E.Quagliariello” of the Bari University and the Institute for Biomedical Technologies of the CNR in Bari, are pleased to announce the “Seventh Annual General Meeting of the Italian Bioinformatics Society (BITS 2010)” to be held in Bari, Italy, from 14th to 16th April 2010.

The BITS 2010 event will highlight cutting-edge advances in all major topics of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology.  Major aim of the conference is to provide an overview of Italian bioinformatics research  and a forum for in-depth assessment of the challenges involved in the dynamic and fast moving field of Bioinformatics for molecular biology research.  Scientific topics covered will include many areas of interest such as metagenomics, system biology, structural and functional  genomics, trascriptomics and proteomics. A particular focus will be on tools and strategies for the storage, management and analysis of data produced by next generation sequencing platforms and other high-throughput techniques.

The program includes 4 keynote lectures (50-60 minutes presentations, additional questions), more than twenty selected short oral presentations (20 minutes presentations, additional questions), poster sessions and two tutorials which will be held in the morning of the first meeting day (April 14, 2010).

Invited Speakers
Prof. Erik Bongcam-Rudloff,
University of Uppsala, The Linnaeus Centre for Bioinformatics, SLU, Uppsala, Sweden

Prof. Cecilia Saccone, University of Bari, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and CNR, Institute for Biomedical Technologies, Bari, Italy

Submitted contributions should address novel bioinformatics and computational biology methods, algorithms, databases, tools and applications for research and development in one or more of the following domains:

    * Genomics
    * Molecular Evolution and Comparative Genomics
    * Protein structure and function
    * Proteomics
    * Transcriptomics
    * Metagenomics
    * New tools for NGS
    * Systems Biology
    * Biological Databases and Biobanks

This list is by no means exclusive of any further topics in the field of Bioinformatics.

Instructions
Abstracts must be submitted through the BITS 2010 Abstracts submission form (soon available from the conference web site!).

All abstracts must be written in English and structured in the following sections: Motivation, Methods, Results. Abstracts' length cannot be greater than 5,000 characters or 4,000 characters (spaces included) when a figure is also included. The abstracts can be submitted for poster or poster/oral presentations.
