Bioinformatician at the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Naples, Italy

BACKGROUND: Diatoms are a major group of unicellular organisms in aquatic ecosystems, they have long been studied in ecology and they are becoming object of interest for biotechnological applications. The research project is focused on Pseudo-nitzschia multistriata, an ecologically relevant species in the Mediterranean Sea that is an excellent candidate model diatom mainly because of its short life cycle and controllable genetics. We are sequencing the genome of Pseudo-nitzschia multistriata as well as transcriptomes of this and of related species in different conditions. The aims of the project are to annotate and finish the genome, integrating RNA‐seq data, and to perform comparative genomics studies. A few weeks will be spent at The Genome Analysis Centre based in Norwich, UK, in the context of an international collaboration for the genome project. More information about the project can be found here http://goo.gl/g4DLY

RESPONSIBILITIES: Analyse the sequencing data obtained through the Illumina/Solexa technology, annotate and finish the genome, integrate RNA-seq data.

REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge of bioinformatics tools, perl language and basic programming in a Unix/Linux environment is required. The candidate must be fluent in English.

PREFERENCES: Familiarity with genome databases and browsers. Basic experience in molecular biology and cell cultures.

LOCALE: Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Naples, Italy.

HOW TO APPLY: The application form (in Italian) can be found here http://goo.gl/GGmnV (position code n. 24/2012)
