Two open positions for curators in the UniProt group at the EBI
Job Description

The Universal Protein Resource (UniProt) group at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory-European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is seeking to recruit a Scientific Database Curator for a demanding role in the provision of the UniProt databases. EMBL-EBI is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

The Curator will contribute to the maintenance and extension of UniProt databases in a number of ways, depending on their expertise. Possible activities include the addition of relevant protein characterisation data extracted from scientific literature or other databases, the analysis and annotation of protein sequences using a range of sequence analysis tools and contributing to more computing-intensive improvements to the database(s) contents. (S)he will work closely with other team members, with UniProt Consortium partners at the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB) and the Protein Information Resource (PIR), and with other EBI groups.

The EBI, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation.

The mission of the UniProt group is to provide the scientific community with a comprehensive, high quality and freely accessible resource of protein sequence and functional information.

Qualifications and Experience
Candidates must have a university degree in life sciences and a broad knowledge in biochemistry and/or molecular biology, with a higher degree (MSc/PhD) and/or relevant post-graduate experience desirable.

Experience in using Windows, biological databases and sequence analysis tools is required.
Previous database curation experience is advantageous but not essential.

The successful candidate must be detail-oriented and must be able to quickly and accurately interpret scientific data and literature. The position requires the curator to possess excellent communication and organizational skills in order to interact well under time pressure within a team of software developers and biologists and with external partners.
