Scientific Database Curation position in the UniProt group, EBI, Cambridge.

*Job Description*

The Universal Protein Resource (UniProt) group at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) is seeking to recruit a Scientific Curator for a demanding role in the curation of the UniProt databases. The mission of the UniProt team is to provide the scientific community with a comprehensive, high quality and freely accessible resource of protein sequence and functional information.

The Curator will contribute to the Gene Ontology Annotation (GOA) project which uses Gene Ontology (GO) a dynamic controlled vocabulary that describes the biological processes, molecular functions and cellular components of a generic cell to assign GO terms to proteins in the UniProt databases using a combination of electronic mappings and manual curation from the literature.

The EBI is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. We are part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation.

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will possess a university degree in the life sciences as well as a broad knowledge of molecular biology and/or biochemistry. A PhD or MSc, although desirable, is not essential.

The Curator will be computer-literate, previous experience in using Windows, biological databases and sequence analysis tools is required. Experience working for a database is advantageous but not essential.

The successful candidate must be detail-oriented and must be able to quickly and accurately interpret scientific literature. The post-holder will work closely with other team members, the GO editorial office at the EBI and with our partners in the international UniProt and GO Consortiums, and with other EBI groups; therefore excellent communication, English language, and organizational skills are required in order to interact well within a team under time pressure.
