Postdoctoral Researcher in Computational Epigenetics
Job title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Computational Epigenetics

Location: Institute of Cell and Molecular Science (ICMS), Barts and The London, School of Medicine and Dentistry, London, UK.

Description: We are seeking an enthusiastic postdoctoral computational biologist interested in studying the role of epigenetics in complex phenotypes and diseases. In particular, the Rakyan lab (http://www.icms.qmul.ac.uk/Profiles/Diabetes/Rakyan%20Vardhman.htm) focuses on how environmental (e.g. diet, age) and stochastic factors influence the epigenome, and consequently complex phenotypic outcomes and diseases such as diabetes and autoimmunity. Our studies integrate molecular genetics, functional genomics, bioinformatics, model organisms and human cohorts.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with large-scale datasets, predominantly ultra high-throughput sequencing-based epigenetic and transcriptional profiling. These datasets will then be integrated with extensive genetic, phenotypic, and epidemiologic data.
The position will be based in Dr Vardhman Rakyan’s group within the ICMS. The ICMS, part of Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, provides a dynamic and supportive environment for basic and translational research including access to world-class functional genomics technologies. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), Barts and The London was ranked as one of the UK’s top four medical schools for the quality of research (based on 4* and 3* outputs). The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work closely with molecular biologists, clinicians, statisticians and other computational biologists both within the institute and externally, in particular Dr Thomas Down’s computational biology group at the Gurdon Institute, Cambridge, UK (http://www.gurdon.cam.ac.uk/down.html).
The successful candidate can start ASAP.

Qualifications: PhD, strong background in computational genomics, experience in handling large-scale functional genomics data, a good publication record.

Salary: This is a BBSRC-funded 3 year fixed-term appointment with a salary at the appropriate point for experience on the Grade 4 scale £30,079 – 31,736 per annum inclusive of London Allowance.

Contact name and information: Informal enquiries (via email) to Dr Rakyan are strongly encouraged (v [dot] rakyan [at] qmul [dot] ac [dot] uk).
