RESEARCH ACTIVITY
I obtained a master degree in Biological Science at the University of Torino in 2004. In 2008, I obtained my Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Torino. As a Ph.D. student, I spent 8 months at the Department of Genetics, Center for Genome Sciences, Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, (USA), where I carried on her research activity under the guidance of Professor Gary Stormo.

Since 2007 Francesca has developed new algorithms and pipelines to analyze deep sequencing data, i.e. genomic, different types of transcriptomic data (mRNA, short-noncoding RNAs, long-noncoding RNA, circ RNA, methylation data) or single-cell experiments. In 2011 I worked at the Department of Computer Science, University of California Riverside (USA) under Professor Gianfranco Ciardo and Professor Stefano Lonardi. I was involved in the project regarding the assembly of the barley genome. From 2011 to 2020, I was an assistant professor at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Turin. I have experience in the fields of next-generation sequencing analysis, artificial intelligence, systems biology, and genetics/epigenetics investigations. In particular, the main applications are on: cancer genomics and epigenomics, clinical biomarkers identification (in colorectal cancer, cervical cancer, bladder cancer, and for the study of the minimal residual disease in lymphoma), computational modeling, evolutionary genomics and modeling, and mathematical models for cancer progression and treatment response. I work on the application of stochastic models in systems biology to study the mechanisms underlying the kinetics of biochemical reactions. In the systems biology field, her works are also focused on the study of cancer heterogeneity by mathematical and computational formalisms. I co-coordinate the quantitative-biology (q-Bio) Group and of Bioinformatics and Genomics Unit. I am the secretary of the Bioinformatics Italian Society BITS and in 2018 I was the general chair of BITS2018
