Two 24 months Fellowships in bioinformatics
Job Description: Two 24 months fellowships are available at the Bioinformatics Lab - Scientific Institute IRCCS E.Medea. Bioinformatics lab at IRRCCS E.Medea is a small but growing multidisciplinary group with main interests in application of computational approaches to molecular evolution and functional characterization of genomic variants. The successful applicants will be appointed to the project \"Juvenile and perinatal stroke: population genetic analysis for the identification of pathogenic alleles and predisposing factors\", funded by the Italian Ministry of Health. The main objective of the project is the implementation of a research framework that integrates population genetics, computational, molecular and informatics methods with patient genetic and clinical data to study the genetic factors that predispose to stroke and perinatal ischaemic injury. The starting point of the study is the identification of functional variants in genes involved in pathways related to the pathogenesis of stroke and perinatal ischaemic injury. The approach we propose, being based on the on evolutionary considerations and inferences of non-neutrality, allows the identification of functional polymorphisms, in contrast to most association studies that generally retrieve associated variants without inference on functionality. One of the two candidates is required to have a degree (Laurea Specialistica or equivalent) in Engineering, Computer science, Mathematics or Physics. and excellent skills in C++ programming. Her/his main responsibility will be the implementation/maintenance of an bioinformatic framework for the project. The other candidate is required to have a degree in Biology or Biotechnology (Laurea Specialistica or equivalent) with skills in human genetics and/or molecular biology. The successful candidates will be involved in all the activities of the group depending on her/his interests.
